Vellor Institute of Technology (VIT) has been established under section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act 1956, Government of India, New Delhi. Founded in 1984 as a self-financing institution known as Vellore Engineering College (VEC), VIT has established itself as an institution of academic excellence in the whole south Indian region. The institute is promoted by the North Arcot Education and Charitable Trust and is governed by a Board of Management.
Vellore Institute of Technology was conferred the status of deemed university on 19.6.2001 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The founder, who became the Chancellor on this up-gradation, now leads the implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan that aims to leverage the Institute's existing strengths and ensure its rapid progress as an internationally recognized institution.
VIT has a state-of-the-art computing facility, which is one of the most complete and powerful networks in institutions of its kind. The institute has well maintained library with over 1, 26,300 books and 14,220 back volumes of scientific and technical periodicals, 560 videos cassettes, 193 audio cassettes and 7,032 CDs.
Accreditation
- Programs at VIT have been accredited by NBA (AICTE).
- The Institution of Engineers (IE, India) has also accredited the Engineering and Technology programmes of VIT.
- The NAAC (UGC) visited Vellore Institute of Technology in May 2003 and has accredited the institution with a B+ Grade. (Corresponding to an institutional score of 75 - 80%).
