Medical Education
The traditional medical practices exist in Tamil Nadu since time immemorial. The state has a rich tradition of medical systems like Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha. Till today, people of this state follow these traditional systems of medicine which are effective and affordable.
The development of modern medical education in Tamil Nadu, particularly in Allopathy, dates back to 1830s. The first medical college in Tamil Nadu was established in Chennai by the British East India Company in 1935. At present, the state has 22 medical colleges, out of which 17 are affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University.
With the establishment of a separate university for Health Sciences in the state, issues of quality and relevance in medical education have been resolved in many ways. The introduction of a formal curriculum in medical ethics at undergraduate level has been made possible by setting up of this university. For further development in the field, the government is trying to include some recent development in teaching methodologies viz. ICT in education and education through satellite.
Tamil Nadu’s status in medical education is improving every day to become global in nature. The state government, by its past, present and future initiatives hopes to achieve its mission of providing high standards of responsive medical education to the students.
