TNPSC Philosophy Syllabus

Philosophy - (Code - 093)

Unit I : INDIAN PHILOSOPHY : Common features, Theism in the Vedas, Central teachings of the Upanisads, Gita - Niskama Karma

Unit II : Schools of Indian PhilosophyOutlines of Oprthodox and Heterdox schools, Arambhavada, Parin-ama vada, Vivartayada, Khyativadas.

UNIT III : Social Philosophy : Thiruvalluvar, Universal brother - hood of vallalar, work - ethic of Swami Vivekananda, Gandhi's concept of Non - Violence, Self respect movement of E.V. Ramasamy.

UNIT IV - Indian Ethics : Concept of Rta, Purusarthas, Varnasrama, Dharma, Family as an ethical institution.

UNIT V - Indian Logic : Pramanas, - Pratyaksa concept of Vyapti, structure of the five - membered Syllogism, Sabda, upamana

UNIT VI - Western Philosophy : Common features of western thought, Relation between logic, Theory of knowledge, Methaphysics and Ethics.

UNIT VII - Logic and Scientific Method : Traditional classification of propositions, square of oppostion obversion conversion. Rules of the categorical syllegism with fallacies: Difference between Deduction and Induction. Stages of Scientific Induction, characteristics of hypothesis, observation and experiment.

UNIT VIII - Greak and Medievai Philosophy : Socratic method, Plat's Idealism, Aristotles, analysis and causality: Augustines theory of knowledge, Anselm's proofs for the existence of God; Aquinas' Theory of knowledge and concept of Trinity.

UNIT IX - Modern Philosophy : Desearte's method of Doubt, Body-Mind problem: Spinoza's concept of substance, Attributes and Modes; Monadology of Leibnitz; Locke on Primary and Secondary qualities, Berkaley's refutation of matter and his Idealism, David Hume on Substance and causality; Kantian Synthesis of Rationalism and Empricism.

UNIT X - Western Ethics : Ancient Hedonism, utilitarianism of Betham and J.S. Mill, Intuitionism of Butler; Kant's catagorical imperative; Bradley's - 'My station and Duties'.
