Tamil Nadu Public Service Commissions Architecture Syllabus

Paper - I

THEORY OF DESIGN : Mass - space relationship, their visual impact, principles of architectural composition, style and character in buildings, theory and concepts of colour.

MATERIALS AND TECHGNOLOGY : Criteria for selection of various buildings materials, varieties of concrete, protective and decorative coatings, non-ferrous metals, plastics - their architectual applications.

BUILDING SERVICES : Buildings components and their functions, water-supply distribution, sewage treatment and sewage systems, Mechanical and electrical services, Air conditioning system and application in buildings.

HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE : Architectural developments in India from Vedic, Dravidian, Indo-aryan and Mughal periods various philosophies and schools of thought in Europe, the three generations of architects and their contribution to modern architecture in the west, contribution of B.V. Doshi C. Correa to Contemprary Architecture.

ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES : Solar Control, heat flow in materials and shelter design in tropics, building legislation their importance in reulating intensity of building and land development, special building legislations, architectural services and competitions, arbitration, tender and contract systems.

Paper - II

COMPUTER APPLICATION : Programme languages and writing, AUTOCAD, AUTO ARCH, Geographical information systems, Use of Remote sensing techniques in reading building typelogies and land-use planning.

HOUSING AND SETTLEMENT PLANNING : Socio economic factors influencing housing design and standards, housing design proceess, planning concepts of Geddes, E. Howard, Doxiadis., Development Planes, Public participation, Low Cost Solutions in developing countries.

ECOLOGY AND LAND SCAPE : Ecology and lanscope conservation, plant materials, history of garden design in Europe, Moghul gardens of India, and land scaping of functional areas and water front developments.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY : Rural construction techniques, Appropriate Technology, Modern materials of construction, construction systems and practice, Project Programming and Network techniques.

URBAN DESIGN AND FUTURE OF ARCHITECTURE : Perception of city form and patterns, significant role of public spaces in towns growth, organisation and articulation of spaces in functional areas, Town scape polices, importance of conservation and heritage programmes in India, energing areas of development.
